As we approach the end of May, the natural world is putting on an absolute masterclass in growth. The leaves are fully unfurled, the garden is vibrant, and the air carries that unmistakable warmth of early summer.

To celebrate this beautiful season, at the end of the month, we are making our annual transition: it is time once again to take our singing bowls outside and into the garden.

If you have only ever experienced an indoor sound bath with us, or if you are completely new to sound therapy, you might be wondering how this works without walls.
Today, we want to demystify the outdoor experience and share why experiencing the sound bowls in the great outdoors is one of the most powerful ways to restore your nervous system.

The Cosy Cocoon vs. The Open Canopy

During the autumn and winter months, our indoor sound baths are all about creating a cozy, dark “cocoon.” It’s a space where you can draw your energy inward, wrapped in a blanket, feeling entirely protected from the outside world. It is a beautiful, deeply comforting experience.

But when the seasons shift and we step outdoors, the magic changes.

Indoors, the sound waves bounce off the walls, wrapping around you in a tight resonance. Outdoors, the sound travels in a linear path, rising up into the open sky and filtering through the trees. It feels incredibly clean, spacious and expansive. Instead of drawing inward, your senses gently open outward, connecting you directly to the earth beneath you.

Going with the Flow of Mother Nature

Over the years, taking these sessions in nature has taught us a beautiful lesson in surrender and flexibility. Indoors, we can control the light, the temperature, and the silence. Outdoors, we work in partnership with Mother Nature and her moody weather changes!

Whether it’s a sudden shift in the breeze, the rustle of the leaves above us, or a sudden chorus of birds, we learn to go with the flow. These aren’t “distractions” to be blocked out; they are part of the therapy.

Science shows that when we combine the steady, predictable frequencies of the bowls with the unpredictable, rich soundscapes of nature, our brains actually enter a deeper state of meditation. No matter where we are: inside, outside, under a ceiling, or under the trees, vibrations will do the work they are meant to do. Sound really does change lives, and nature is its perfect amplifier.

Your Outdoor Comfort Checklist (The Practical Stuff)

To get the most out of your outdoor session in the garden, comfort is absolutely key. Because you will be lying still, your body temperature will naturally drop, even on a warm, sunny day.

Here is how to prepare based on our outdoor venue guidelines:

  • What to Lie On: Because we will be nestled directly on the grass in the garden, we highly recommend bringing a floor mat, yoga mat, or a waterproof picnic blanket that you don’t mind getting a little marked by nature. If you prefer not to lie on the grass, you are very welcome to bring a camping chair to sit on instead!
  • Blankets & Cushions: Warmth is essential for deep relaxation. Please bring a thick, cosy blanket (or two!) to wrap yourself in, and a comfortable cushion or pillow for under your head.
  • Dress for the British Weather: Wear comfortable, loose layers, thick socks and perhaps bring sunscreen if it’s a bright day. It is always better to have too many layers than too few!
  • An Eye Pillow/Mask: Highly recommended for outdoor sessions to help block out the dappled sunlight through the trees and encourage your eyes to stay closed and relaxed.

Essential On-the-Day Details

  • Our Beautiful Venue: We are incredibly grateful to host our outdoor sound baths in the tranquil, sheltered garden of The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum – The Wardrobe, 58 The Close, Salisbury SP1 2EX (located in the stunning Salisbury Cathedral Close).

Beginners Welcome: No “Zen” Required

If you have never meditated or attended a sound bath before, please know there is absolutely nothing you need to “get right.” You do not need a quiet mind, you do not need to sit in an uncomfortable position, and you do not need any prior experience.

Your only job is to lie down under the trees, breathe in the fresh air, and let the sounds of the bowls and the birds wash over you.
