What to expect during a soundbath

I would like to mention that every sound practitioner is different and so each soundbath is different too.

So I thought I would share with you what typically happens in our soundbath sessions at Salisbury Meditation and Soundtherapy so that you can know what to expect. I know it can be a bit daunting coming to a session when you don’t know what is going to happen so hopefully this will help.

We try and make everyone as comfortable as possible during the session so they are cosy and able to fully relax. In our session we normally have people lying on yoga mats plus a camping mat for extra padding. If you are unable to lie on the floor, please get in contact as we could help find a position that works for you or even have you sitting in a chair if necessary. We ask that you bring a cushion for under your head and a blanket so you can stay nice and warm. It might sound crazy even in the summer but during a soundbath peoples body temperature often drops so people can feel colder. We have bolster and cushions you can place under your knees for extra comfort. You might like to bring an eye pillow if this helps you keep your eyes closed and relaxed.

So at the beginning of the session we make sure everyone is comfy and able to relax.

To start the session we often do a guided meditation, don’t worry if you haven’t done any meditation before this will be a short session (max 10 minutes) where we might do a body scan, work on getting the body and mind to relax or guide you through a guided meditation like walking through the woods and coming to rest on a chair.

We will then do our opening sequence where we play one bowl and come and may come and move this over you. We recommend you have your eyes closed during the session for this reason. From here we will play the bowls together in a sequence with particular meaning for example balancing the chakras (energy systems).

We will then do our closing sequence again moving the bowl over you.

Because our sessions are smaller we also give people the opportunity to experience standing in the biggest bowl so that they can feel the vibrations on a deeper level to help them relax further.

We will then hold space for people to gently and quietly awaken the senses, body and mind to gently come out of the deep relaxed state people often reach during a soundbath.

What to expect after a soundbath

A Sound Bath will give you the ultimate feeling of calmness, make you feel rejuvenated and give you a quieter mind. People often say that they slept really well afterwards. Some feel like they need quiet and space afterwards, whereas others feel energised! This feeling can depend on how you were feeling before you came into the session.

Please note that you may need to sit quietly for a while after the session before driving or going about your normal day to day activities. It is important not to rush around straight away, as it takes time for your brain to recalibrate and get used the feelings you have experienced during the Sound Therapy session.

What makes our soundbath different

As I said early we have intentionally made our sessions smaller group sessions as we know that our clients benefit from having more support in our welcoming environment but also from experiencing have the singing bowls placed on them to help deeply relax and release tension. During our sessions we only use singing bowls and koshi chimes, we don’t use gongs.

How often to have a soundbath

If you are trying to change your levels of stress, anxiety, switching your mind off or sleeping well we recommend sessions fortnightly to begin with as this helps you to relax and unwind. This may feel challenging at first particularly if making time just for you is new. We would also recommend starting a meditation practice to help you reach those goals earlier in your everyday life. If this is something you would like support with please just reach out to us.
